In a recent show on Speed, I was interested in how a rally driver controlled
his progression around some corners by application of the rear brake lever
mounted between the two seats. Yeah, I know it's not the same, but yes, cars
could have separate brake controls. But for the majority of drivers, with their
relative lack of driving skill, desire for less complexity, and typical
distractions up the ying-yang, they wouldn't buy something that required more
involvement.
Another analogy is cameras. The vast majority are automatic because people
don't want to deal with setting stuff. Heck, they'd miss some otherwise good
pictures setting apertures, shutter speed, etc. But lots of people do want that
ability because they want to be able to tweak their pictures. Maybe some people
do want to tweak their driving with braking options.
