Martin, I found just the opposite.  When I went from a K75S (think
sport riding tucked position) to the K-RT and later the R11GS my back
was happier.  The upright (weight directly over the hips) position
coupled with the longer back reach of the bars allowed me to do 1K
days!  I first tried adding bar-backs then changed to a "C" bar. 
Both helped but not like getting upright.  BTW I have degenerating
discs in both the cervical and the lumbar regions.  However I average
15K a year and would do more except that making an income has become
priority.  ;-{{
