The moment of truth... almost. The bike made a lot of noise as I wheeled it out of the garage. I wheeled it back in and checked tire pressure. 18 front and 15 rear is not enough. After filling the tires to 32/36 I wheeled the bike out of the garage and ...

How about that. It runs. I checked the timing while it was running and found it to be fine. That’s about all for today. Tomorrow it will get its first ride and head retorque.

Before wheeling the bike back into the garage I put the timing hole plug in the engine case and put the front cover back on the bike. It’s now 100% back together.

I rode the bike around the neighborhood including a stop at a gas station to get some fresh gas. Total mileage this test ride was about 6 miles. Issues:

My left footpeg was too high, making it uncomfortable to shift. I adjusted it down one notch when I got back home.

The clutch didn’t feel quite right, not engaging until the lever was almost completely released. Not sure my adjustment changed anything; will find out next test ride. The clutch has always grabbed late and it might be the way it always was; the difference being that I’ve not ridden the bike since April and have forgotten what it felt like.

That’s it. No noticeable leaks or stranger than normal sounds. The bike seems to run freer and have a bit more oomph at low RPM. I like.

I’m entering this while waiting for the engine to cool down. Once it is cool I’ll retorque the heads and check the valves before my next test ride.

This morning I re-torqued the heads (they already needed it) and re-adjusted the valves. This afternoon I took a 20 minute ride to get the bike up to operating temperature then, when I got home, hooked up the carbtune to set the idle and off idle. The bike is running well but there is an annoying ticking sound that I don’t remember from the past. I forgot to check the rocker arm end play when I put the heads on. Next retorque and valve check I’ll be sure to do that.

Today I checked the rocker arm end play, torqued the heads again, and checked the valves. The left intake end play was a touch loose. Excpept for the head screws I loosened to adjust the end play the torque was still fine. Three of four valves were still correct. The right exhaust was a touch tight. That’s about all I’ll do for the next 75-100 miles when I’ll change the oil.

It’s 100 miles since the bike went back together. I changed the oil after a ride this afternoon. When checking for leaks I found some weapage from the base cylinder on the right side. I‘ll check the cylinder base nuts after the engine cools down. I’ll also check head torque and valves again.

The bike seems to be running well. The engine feels loose. Because of the Cam? The lightened flywheel? Whatever the reason I seem to have plenty of power, although I haven’t had the bike over 70 MPH yet. It used to run out of steem about an indicated 80.

This ends the teardown specific pages. Ongoing bike maintenance will pick up starting with the 20,400 mile service page.
