Given Jerry's recent question and a phone call I got from Mac
I found a caltrans road conditions web page and added a link
to it from the smbc web page (look under "Other Pages").   To
answer some questions:

    IS CLOSED TO SOUTHBOUND TRAFFIC 1 MI SOUTH OF LUCIA /23.5 MI SOUTH OF
BIG SUR/ (MONTEREY CO) - DUE TO A WASHOUT - LOCAL BUSINESSES NORTH AND SOUTH 
ARE OPEN 

    1-WAY CONTROLLED TRAFFIC FROM 13 MI NORTH TO 13.5 MI NORTH OF BIG SUR 
(MONTEREY CO) 24 HRS A DAY 7 DAYS A WEEK - DUE TO CONSTRUCTION - MOTORISTS 
ARE SUBJECT TO 20 MINUTE DELAYS 

So it looks like any jaunts up or down the coast are out of the question.
