I did an insurance price audit this summer, getting quotes for
  different bikes.

Prices for a new (2003) BMW's were generally quite low.
Exception was the R1100 S and K1200 RS. These were priced closer
  to the sportbike pricing range.

Most unusual discovery I made: I could insure a K1200 GT for a
little over half of what I would be charged for a K1200 RS!

The GT is considered touring, the RS is considered sport.

So if I were in the market for a K12, I would factor in this
price differential. Turns out that the GT would be cheaper to buy
if I factor in the insurance savings over 3-4yrs!
