It is obvious that you have not replaced a chain lately.  On a friends triumph with 20,000 miles the cost for parts alone was $265.00  for chain, two sprockets and the lock washer.  
Admittedly the triumph parts were expensive since no one makes after market parts for them,,,but the chain alone which was generic was still $120.    

So if you replace this stuff every 20K and you drive it 100k the cost will be $1,350 just in parts.  Makes a few bottle of gear oil look like a bargin doesn't it?
