Guys, things are changing. The new R1200GS has the whole filter/pump 
arrangement on the left side of the tank under a cover, such that it 
looks like without a lot of fuel in the tank, one can simply put the 
bike on it's sidestand and do all the pump/filter work without removing 
the tank.  Additionally, my dealer told me that the new fuel filter is 
either permanent or very long life.
