I also have a '94 RS with over 100,000 miles on it. Sometimes, rarely, I
dribble some more gas, over the bottom of the filler cone, but I do it only
while I am on a ride. Too much gas and when the bike is on the side-stand
the fuel may over flow outside the tank. It happened to me. I never found
out the truth about your question but I can say:
My red light first comes on after 320 km (200 miles). After that I still
have another 80 km (50 miles) to find fuel. The tank is rated for 23 liter
volume, the bike uses 5.5 liter/100 km. I can do 320+80=400 km on a tank.
400 takes 22 litres which would still leave 1 litres, according. This one
litre fuel volume could be the volume of the tank above the bottom of the
filler-cone. (3.78 litre=1.0 US gallon; 1 litre=is a bit less than a quart).

Bike in question is a '94 R1100RS
Before I launch into taking things apart, I thought I would ask a couple of
questions and get some opinions.
As I suppose all of our fuel tanks are so equipped, my tank has a recessed
filler tube. Once fuel gets to the bottom of the filler tube, I can continue
dribble fuel into the tank for quite a while, but I don't normally do that
unless I'm going to head out for a ride immediately in case that extra space
'reserved' for fuel expansion.
Is all of that dribbling included in the stated fuel capacity of ~6.2
gallons? Without the dribbling, what should I expect to have as a total
Is there any issue with taking the filler tube out and either grinding some
of the bottom off or drilling some holes around the edge for additional
to speed up refueling?
